The Association began as the Arts Discussion Group within the Women’s Committee of the South Glamorgan County Council in 1984. The group became the South East Wales Women’s Arts Association in 1997 and its defining aim has continued to be to develop and support the provision of creative opportunities for women in the arts.

The Association holds a unique position within the cultural sector of Wales and the UK: its successful track record of delivering community arts projects, digital arts workshops, exhibitions and events is evident in its support from current funders and a loyal membership of over 700 members.
